Music exerts a profound influence on humans, captivating our emotions, thoughts, and physical responses in unique ways. In this episode, I am joined by special guest Steve Lowe to discuss the power of music and our belief that it is the magic of the universe. We also delve into rock music and its reflection of the human condition, and explore the metaphorical and scientific idea that the universe itself may be akin to a giant guitar.
Join in the discussion below, tell us your favourite musical genre and why, post pics of your favourite albums and explain why they are important to you and so on.
I couldn't do this episode and let pass some comments on the perfect group and albums that relate to the whole idea of music is magic and the whole universe is a giant guitar.
First up, the line "the whole Universe is a giant guitar" is from the song "Last of the New Wave Riders" by Utopia.
The band is a project from Todd Rundgren, he of Meatloaf and Jim Steinman fame, but is more prog-metal than the stadium rock of the Meatloaf albums, and the song was written long before the concept of Super-strings ever made it into the popular consciousness.
However, the band that mostly fit in with the concepts of musical magic and a universe built on music, are German space rockers ELOY.
Eloy have been around since the late 60s, and centre around lead guitarist and vocalist, Frank Bornemann. If this guy had been born in the UK or the USA, he would quite rightly be regarded as a Guitar God. As it is, ELOY have sold millions of albums, the vast majority of which are concept albums covering everything from Atlantis to dystopian futures, to new age themes of nature to the question of what happens with the human spirit.
The album I would highly recommend is this one: Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes.
From the opening notes to the haunting conclusion, this album is a masterwork of vision, performance and execution. If you can, get the original gatefold vinyl release to fully appreciate the love and magic that went into making this record.
Then afterwards, listen to my Podcast episode again and see if you have gained any additional insights. If you have, please comment below and tell us what they were.
